Head south by deluxe motorcoach to begin a 28-day journey that circles North America. Holland America’s ms Volendam casts off from Fort Lauderdale, FL, with 12 gorgeous ports of call on her exotic timetable.

Cartagena’s bright colonial buildings and towering stone walls perch in front of coffee plantations. From Atlantic to Pacific, we’ll sail for 82 kilometres through the Panama Canal, a feat of engineering that cuts through the lush landscape lock by lock. The adventure turns north. Jungles full of wildlife surround the Pacific ports of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Puerto Chiapas, Santa Cruz Huatulco, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas offer palm-covered mountains, crystal blue water, golden sands, bold colours, and bold spices – best washed down with tequila! Now stretch out and relax at sea until we reach San Francisco, California and our final destination, Vancouver, British Columbia. With our land legs on, we’ll see the sights then board the iconic Rocky Mountaineer for Canada’s best scenery en route to Banff.

Day 1: Lima, OH

Board the DeNure coach and begin your journey south. Stop this evening for an overnight stay and dinner with your fellow travellers.

Day 2: Marietta, GA

After breakfast this morning, begin your travels to Georgia. drive by the Kentucky Horse Park, which is the heart of the Horse Capital of the World, where the world’s finest Thoroughbred racehorses have been bred for nearly two centuries. You’ll also travel along the Iron Works Pike before getting into Marietta, GA and your hotel for the night.

Day 3: Titusville, FL

Continue your journey after breakfast stopping in Tifton, GA known as the ‘Friendly City.’ This evening, settle into the Holiday Inn in Titusville, FL and enjoy dinner with your fellow passengers.

Day 4: Arrive in Fort Lauderdale, Board Cruise

Wake up refreshed and excited as you transfer to the cruise terminal and begin your 20-day cruise. The ms Volenddam will be waiting in port to take you on this trip of a lifetime.

Day 5-6: At Sea

Enjoy the elegant and spacious ms Volendam during your next few days at sea. This ship takes her décor cues from the garden. Her grand public spaces are graced with floral fabrics and tapestries, as well as huge vases of fresh floral arrangements. While on board, relax with a spa treatment, or dine at one of the many fine restaurants.

Day 7: Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena has a turbulent history of conquistadors and pirates. Sir John Hawkins besieged the city in 1568 and his nephew, Sir Francis Drake, sacked it 18 years later. In response, Spain poured millions into the port’s defense, building the fortifications that are today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From atop “las murallas” see a panoramic view of the harbor. Shoppers will find modern day treasures like emeralds and leather goods along the cobblestone streets.

Day 8: Transit Panama Canal

Nearly every hard-won mile carved through the jungle here carries a story – of rivers dammed, gigantic lakes dug; of malaria, misery and miraculous powers of will.

Gatun Lake is key to supplying the water necessary to operate the locks system. Formed by an earthen dam across the Chagres River to keep the water 85 feet above sea level, the water runs downhill to fill the locks. No pumps, no power other than the force of gravity! Fact: It will take about 52 million gallons of water to float your Holland America ship through the locks.

Travel to the Gatun Locks for a bird’s eye view of the immense ships passing through the Panama Canal.

Day 9: At Sea

Enjoy the day at your own pace aboard the luxurious ship. With a large variety of entertainment options, you’re certain to find something to suit your fancy.

Day 10: Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica

The city of Puerto Caldera, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, has a number of national parks within easy reach for cruise visitors. ‘Skywalk’ on top of the forest across suspended bridges more that half a mile above the ground giving you a birds eye vies of the cloud forest. For those less adventurous an aerial tram will fly you through the rain forest canopy. Enjoy a Gondola ride with a naturalist guide or visit the hummingbird garden or a butterfly farm. Discover the Poas Volcano National Park or stroll the streets of San Jose the capital of Costs Rica. There is no end to the diversity you can spend your day exploring.

Day 11: Corinto, Nicaragua

It’s a land of rum and volcanoes. Puerto Corinto is a small town on the northwest coast of Nicaragua – a region bounded by great lakes to the south, Honduras to the north, and volcanic peaks to the east. In Corinto, cruise visitors can stroll along the Costa Azul for a view of the bay and its islands. In nearby Chinandega, discover Mayan artifacts at the archeological museum. Farther afield explore the ruins of León Viejo, excavated from centuries of volcanic debris.

Day 12: Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

This port city was constructed in 1984 to help connect nearby cities. Travelers often venture out to Antigua, a 90-minute trek to where 17th century colonial facades beckons and Guatemalan history comes alive. In the cultured little country modern Maya still weave their stories on backstrap looms, and the great stone temples of Tikal stand in silent testament to ancient Mayan ingenuity.

Day 13: Puerto Chiapas, Mexico

Puerto Chiapas is a unique boutique port of call. Visit the mysterious archaeological Mayan ruin of Izapa and the city of Tapachula. Take a journey to the Ejido Miguel Aleman banana plantation to learn about the growing and harvesting of bananas in Chiapas. Spend several hours at Finca Argovia, one of Mexico’s most famous coffee plantations or take a guided hike in Chiapas’ Sierra Madre mountains. You’ll learn about the local flora and fauna, and get a great view of the Tacana volcano.

Day 14: Huatulco, Mexico

Huatulco, situated on Mexico’s Pacific Coast in the state of Oaxaca, has nine bays and 36 beaches, offering more than enough opportunities for fun in the sun. There are also archaeological sites to explore, rivers and waterfalls to discover. The food will give you plenty to write home about. The state of Oaxaca has some of the most iconic dishes in Mexico’s culinary repertoire. You won’t go home hungry.

Day 15: At Sea

Sit back relax and enjoy your days at sea. With the many amenities on board the ship you will find lots to keep you as busy or as quiet as you wish.

Day 16: Manzanillo, Mexico

Manzanillo is one of Mexico’s busiest, most important ports (some say the busiest and most important). Located on the Pacific, it’s nicknamed the Sailfish Capital of the World. It’s little wonder, then, that most of the activities in Manzanillo are centered on or near the water, and most of the city’s culinary specialties are inspired by the fruits of the sea.

Day 17: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta retains quite a bit of its colonial-era charm. Its town square, Plaza de Armas, and the gorgeous parish church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, serve as the loveliest representations of bygone ages. Alongside these echoes of the past are more modern attractions and trendy restaurants serving contemporary Mexican cuisine. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more pleasant place to spend part of your cruising vacation.

Day 18: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

It’s desert, beach, blue surf and big fish along the southern tip of Baja California. Cabo San Lucas is the entertainment hub and the end of the road, where the peninsula goes off a cliff into the sea. Stroll the charming galleries and shops of San Jose del Cabo, this old town exudes classic Mexico.

Day 19-20: At Sea

Make the next few days at sea as active or as restful as you choose! Breathe in the fresh air on a stroll around the walking track, sip a cocktail by the pool or indulge in a spa treatment.

Day 21: San Francisco, California

San Francisco, is a hilly city on the tip on a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean an San Francisco Bay. Know for its year-round fog, iconic Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, colourful Victorian houses an in the bay sits Alcatraz Island, site of the notorious former prison. A visit to Fishermans Wharf is a must do with its sea lions, boutique stores and seafood restaurants.

Day 22: At Sea

Sit back and relax with a day at sea. Perhaps take advantage of the fitness centre, or simply relax on the deck by the pool.

Day 23: Victoria, BC

Victoria, capital of British Columbia, is one of the top ten islands in the world. The city sits on the craggy southern end of Vancouver Island and boasts abundant parkland. It’s British colonial past shows in its Victorian architecture. The city abounds with tearooms, antique shops and galleries as well as other unique shop, coffee bars and restaurants. The city’s blend of old world charm and new world experiences are a delight.

Day 24: Vancouver, BC, Disembark Ship

You will disembark the ship after breakfast this morning and settle into your hotel for the next few nights. Enjoy the remainder of the day to explore this vibrant city on your own.

Day 25: Vancouver Sightseeing

After breakfast, board the Rocky Mountaineer for an exciting journey through the Canadian Rockies. Traverse the Rockies and experience the beauty of Canada like never before! Enjoy spectacular scenery and luxuries service, before arriving in Kamloops. Transfer to your hotel this evening for an overnight stay.
