This All Hallows’ Eve we’ll learn about and participate in the tragic series of events that penned Salem’s dark standing in history. In 1692, two little girls in Salem (now Danvers) suffered violent contortions and screaming fits that were deemed the devil’s work. The diagnosis? Bewitchment! Bridget Bishop was hanged on Salem’s Gallows Hill, the first of 19, fuelled by Puritan hysteria. As you travel this historic area, learn more about the bitter legacy of the Salem witch trials that has endured in Massachusetts for centuries.
On the lighter side, Salem revels in Hallowe’en! The town dresses up for parades, the shops sell Wiccan baubles, and the night reigns. We’ll discover the web of lies that fed the Witch Trials at the Salem Witch Museum, and walk by candlelight through Salem’s old graveyards. Enjoy the opportunity to become a witch or wizard with the help of a creative team during a sombre photo shoot. Cast judgement as members of the Puritan jury in the theatrical performance, “Cry Innocent,” with original testimony from 325-year-old court documents!
On All Hallows’ Day, feel free to become your favourite ghost or goblin as we head for the award-winning Turning Stone Resort, stopping first at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge to view the work of the famous 20th-century artist who depicted “everyday life” for the Saturday Evening Post.
