A polynesian paradise of emerald volcanoes, sugar sand beaches, and sorbet sunsets. Our journey begins with a flight to Honolulu, spending our first two nights in Waikiki. While here, we enjoy a city tour and a trip to Pearl Harbor. The next morning, we hit the seas, boarding Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Pride of America for seven nights.

Our ports of call, Honolulu (Oahu), Kahului (Maui), Hilo and Kona (Big Island) and Nawiliwili (Kauai), are towering green mountains that pop out of the impossibly blue Pacific and make us all feel small and happy. This is the land of lava and coffee and aloha! It’s a peaceful place where smiling, tattooed Kama’aina (locals) strum ukuleles and dance in grass hula skirts around bonfires. Halfway across the world, these pretty islands provide the perfect escape. Walk along beaches where surf legends cut their teeth. Shop ‘til you drop or sip frosty beverages in coconuts while bronzing your cares away poolside.

We fly out from Honolulu to Los Angeles for a guided city tour followed by a coastal drive to San Diego for two days of sightseeing. With over 60 beaches, and a reputation as America’s most laid back city, San Diego feels like a cozy collection of Californian villages. Don’t miss Balboa Park’s cultural hot spots! Then it’s back to Los Angeles to board your return flight home, the smell of sun, sand, and ocean air fresh on your mind.

Volcanoes National Park

The closest place to observe a volcanic eruption within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is from the summit of Kilauea, the world’s youngest and most active volcano, above the cliffs of Uwekahuna (wailing priests). Here, the Jaggar Museum overlook provides views of Halema’uma’u Crater, a volcano that became active again in March 2008. An ever-present plume of volcanic gas and ash rises from the crater to remind visitors that molten rock is constantly churning in a lava lake beneath the crater floor. Put on your brave face and traverse the plain of shiny black ropes of rock, hardened in waves that spill to the ocean.

About 3,000ft across and almost 300ft deep, this is where Pele lives, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. If luck is with you, you’ll find yourself on Jaggar’s patio just after sunset with a thunderstorm in the distance providing a backdrop for Pele’s liquid fire show. The park also houses ancient rainforests and meadows in case you miss Big Island’s beautiful green things.

Next we’ll make our way to Pearl Harbor, one of the most historic locations in the United States, halfway between Japan and the continental USA. Guests will have plenty of time to spend here as there’s lots to experience. Pearl Harbor gets its name from early Hawaiians who called this place “WaiMomi,” which means“water of pearl” because of the abundance of pearls once found in its waters. Today, Pearl Harbor remains an active military base, known for the surprise attack in WWII. We return in time for dinner at the hotel this evening.

Kahului, like much of modern Hawaii is closely tied to the sugar industry. Prior to middle of the 1800’s, Central Maui was largely uninhabited.
