Behind its sleepy coves and charming lighthouses, Newfoundland & Labrador’s unusual geography cradles a storybook history of Vikings, shipwrecks, and pirates. Get close to the natural wonders of this breathtaking land! History buffs will enjoy Norstead Viking Village, a living history museum trading port with 1000 AD period buildings and a replica Viking ship.

In the wilds of Gros Morne National Park, a local guide points out the unique bouldered landscape of the ancient Tablelands. A catamaran cruise of Witless Bay Ecological Reserve showcases Canada’s largest population of humpback whales and half a million Atlantic Puffins.

In Labrador, explore the history of fishing villages in Red Bay. In small-town capital St. John’s, walk the steep streets of candy-coloured row houses and explore 17thcentury Signal Hill on a guided tour. In Canada’s rugged east coast, the air smells of the sea, accordions compete with bagpipes, and hospitality reigns in the province of kind folks.

Red Bay, Labrador

Red Bay is an illustration of Labrador coastal living – a primaeval landscape of rock at the mercy of Atlantic weather, inhabited by a hearty people with a long and rich history.

From the 1500s to the 1600s, the waters of Red Bay were thick with Basque whaling galleons. One of these sailing ships sank to the seabed during a storm – could it be the San Juan? Preserved in the icy water, the remains and artefacts conserved at the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013), tell a fascinating centuries-old story. Take a hike along the beach and step into the interpretation centre to see an 8-metrelong chalupa, a gondola-type rowboat once manned by five oarsmen. Compare the size of the chalupa to the assembled collections of whale bones on display. And take a moment to cast a glance out over the Bay because, somewhere, local legend tells of buried treasure.
