Nearly every hard-won mile carved through the jungle here carries a story – of rivers dammed, gigantic lakes dug; of malaria, misery and miraculous powers of will.

Gatun Lake is key to supplying the water necessary to operate the locks system. Formed by an earthen dam across the Chagres River to keep the water 85 feet above sea level, the water runs downhill to fill the locks. No pumps, no power other than the force of gravity! Fact: It will take about 52 million gallons of water to float your ship through the locks. Precision steering is of paramount importance during your transit of the storied Panama Canal. Have your camera ready for this memorable passage for the shores of the canal boast an abundance of tropical bird, animals and plants.
