Southern England is speckled with charming cottages that sprout from chalk hills, pristine beaches, and cozy ports. Extraordinary gardens bloom under sunny skies, and stone castles grow old beside the sea, steeped in history and legend. Every view is lovely, and there’s so much to see!

The massive sarsens at Stonehenge align with the cosmos, they say, a mysterious stone puzzle on a pretty green plain. Tintagel Castle breathes Arthurian tales of wizardry, love, and betrayal from its weathered walls above the Cornish Sea. The black granite cliffs at Land’s End add a wild touch to dreamy days. We’ll explore the Lost Gardens of Heligan, recently restored into one of the UK’s most romantic estates. The Eden Project is a stunning eco-park where biomes of plants from around the world create a diverse horticultural playground.

Beachy St. Ives is a pretty painting on a sunny day with white sand, shopping, and brilliant galleries like the Tate Modern. The Minack Theatre’s grassy steps set the stage for performances overlooking the Atlantic. We’ll take a Jurassic Coast cruise along deep red Triassic cliffs and see the world’s most famous cars at the Beaulieu Motor Museum on the grounds of the Montagu family estate (c.1538). Then, Greenwich! A maritime borough on the River Thames, it’s home to the Cutty Sark, the Naval Museum, and Royal Observatory.

Basking in Bath

Bath’s natural hot springs are its namesake. Built by the Romans in 60 AD, it was called Aquae Sulis (“the waters of Sulis”). Today, Bath is a worldwide UNESCO heritage spa city. A short drive from London, honey-coloured stone buildings highlight Bath’s beautiful Georgian architecture (over 5,000 of merit) set in the rolling hills of Somerset.

A striking example of Georgian architecture is Bath Abbey, with fan-vaulting, large stained-glass windows, and tower. Another is the Royal Crescent, a row of 30 terraced Georgian houses built in the 1700s giving a grand nod to rus in urbe (the country in the city).

Visit the many museums in Bath (only a splash apart) and, of course, The Roman Baths. A must-do: try a Sally Lunn bun in one of Bath’s oldest houses (c.1482).
