  • Day-to-Day Itinerary

    Day 1: Welcome to Nova Scotia, Guided Walking Tour of Halifax 

    Fly to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where you’ll meet your tour director before transferring into the vibrant heart of downtown. Enjoy lunch on your own with time to explore local favourites at the Halifax Seaport Market or nearby cafés featuring fresh Atlantic fare. In the afternoon, embark on a guided walking tour through historic Halifax, uncovering its rich maritime heritage and discovering the stories behind its most iconic landmarks. Later, check in to your centrally located hotel and freshen up before the evening’s festivities. Tonight, gather with your fellow travellers for an included welcome dinner along the waterfront, the perfect way to toast the beginning of your Nova Scotia adventure.

    Day 2: High Head Trail, Polly’s Cove Hike, Peggy’s Cove

    After breakfast, depart Halifax and travel southwest along the rugged coastline to the Dr. Bill Freedman Nature Reserve, a protected area connected to the Trans Canada Trail. Begin your day with a hike along the High Head Trail (A1/Easy – 4 km/88 m), tracing a striking stretch of granite shoreline with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Continue with a scenic walk on the Polly Cove Loop (A1/Easy – 4 km/74 m), where windswept coastal barrens and unique vantage points of the Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse offer unforgettable photo opportunities. Enjoy an included lunch before continuing to the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, one of Canada’s most photographed landmarks. Visit the Nova Scotia Visitor Information Centre and the moving Fishermen’s Memorial, dedicated to those lost at sea. Arrive back in Halifax by late afternoon and enjoy free time to relax, explore the waterfront, or sample one of the city’s many excellent restaurants for dinner on your own.

    Day 3: Graves Island Provincial Park, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg Walking Tour, Fisheries Museum  

    Today, set out along Nova Scotia’s scenic South Shore for a day of coastal discovery. Begin with a refreshing coastal walk at Graves Island Provincial Park (A1/Easy – 3.4km/50m), where ocean breezes and sweeping shoreline views showcase the province’s natural beauty. Continue to the charming town of Mahone Bay, known for its colourful waterfront and iconic trio of churches, with time to browse local shops and galleries. Enjoy an included lunch before arriving in Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its perfectly preserved architecture and maritime heritage. Enjoy a guided walking tour through the historic streets, then visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic for a fascinating look at Nova Scotia’s seafaring past. On the return journey to Halifax, stop in the picturesque village of Chester, a seaside community known for its sailing culture and coastal charm. Arrive back in Halifax in the evening and enjoy free time to dine and explore at your leisure.

    Day 4: Annapolis Valley, Grand-Pré National Historic Site, Dykes Trail Hike

    After breakfast, journey west to the picturesque Annapolis Valley, most scenic and historic regions. Begin with a guided tour of Grand-Pré National Historic Site, where you’ll learn about the Acadian people and have time to stroll the peaceful memorial grounds. Continue to the nearby Horton Landing site, an important location in Acadian history, before heading to Wolfville for lunch on your own. Later, enjoy a leisurely walk along the Dykes Trail, taking in the scenic views and learning about the region’s historic system of dykes and farmland. End the day with a wine tour and tasting (if available), sampling the region’s acclaimed wines.

    Day 5: Mi’kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail, Victoria Park Walk, Truro Tidal Bore Viewing Centre

    After breakfast, depart Halifax for the Mi’kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail (A2/moderate - 4.3km/63m), to explore the rich Indigenous and Mi’kmaq history of the region along scenic walking paths. Following the trail, enjoy lunch on your own before visiting Victoria Park in Truro for a relaxing walk among waterfalls, forested trails, and picturesque scenery. Next, stop at the Truro Tidal Bore Viewing Centre to witness the dramatic rise of the Bay of Fundy’s tidal bore. Return to Halifax for dinner on your own and a free evening to relax or explore the city at your leisure.

    Day 6: Gaetz Brook Greenway, Clam Harbour Provincial Park Beach Walk, Halifax Citadel 

    In the morning, depart Halifax for a morning hike along the scenic Gaetz Brook Greenway, a designated section of the Trans Canada Trail, where peaceful forest and wetland trails offer a perfect connection with nature. Stop for a picnic lunch amid the tranquil landscape before continuing to Clam Harbour Provincial Park for a relaxing beach walk along the Atlantic shoreline. Return to Halifax in the afternoon for some time to freshen up before the evening’s festivities. Regroup for a guided tour of the Halifax Citadel grounds, exploring the historic fortress and its commanding views of the city. Then, enjoy an included farewell Garrison Dinner, a memorable meal celebrating your Nova Scotia adventure.

    Day 1

    1. Halifax Walking Tour

    (A1/Easy – 5km/40–50 m) 

    Experience Halifax on a walking tour featuring varied terrain, including flat paved streets, cobblestones, gentle slopes to scenic viewpoints, and wooden waterfront boardwalks. Enjoy cityscapes, historic architecture, and harbour views along the way.


    Day 2

    2. High Head Trail, Dr. Bill Freedman Nature Reserve

    (A1/Easy - 4km/88m)

    The trail begins along forested boardwalks before opening onto coastal granite ledges. It follows the shoreline with gentle rises, offering stunning ocean views and occasional uneven footing. The modest elevation gain and varied terrain make it slightly more challenging than its “easy” rating suggests.


    3. Polly Cove Trail, Dr. Bill Freedman Nature Reserve

    (A1/Easy - 4km/74m)

    Starting from the parking area, this trail leads into an open coastal landscape of low-lying barrens and exposed granite. It follows the shoreline with gentle ups and downs, offering sweeping ocean views and naturally varied terrain. With a modest elevation gain, it’s an easy, enjoyable walk with plenty to see along the way.


    Day 3

    4. Graves Island Coastal Walk, Graves Island Provincial Park

    (A2/moderate – 3.4km/50m) 

    This easy-to-moderate loop traces the shoreline of scenic Mahone Bay. The terrain alternates between well-maintained gravel paths, exposed granite ledges, and soft forested trails.

      

    5. Lunenberg Walking Tour

    (A1/Easy – 3.8km/30-50m)

    Stroll along paved streets and occasional cobblestones through the historic Old Town, descending gently to the waterfront. 


    Day 4

    6. Grand-Pré National Historic Site

    (A1/Easy)

    This trail winds through rolling grassy fields and low Acadian dykes, with soft paths that rise and fall gently, creating a moderately uneven hiking experience. Interpretive panels highlight the history along the way. 

     

    7. Dyke Trail

    (A1/Easy – 3km/10m)  

    The Dyke Trail follows historic Acadian dykes that reclaimed farmland from the Minas Basin, forming part of the larger Harvest Moon Trailway network. This flat, easy path offers wide views of tidal flats, marshes, and farmland, with the sound of birds and flowing water.

    8. Mi’kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail

    (A2/Moderate – 4.4km/63m)  

    The Mi’kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail is a loop through mixed forest with boardwalks, steps, and a small bridge over a stream, making some sections easier to cross but still moderately uneven. Interpretive panels highlight 11,000 years of Mi’kmaw history, archaeology, and local ecology. Hikers can enjoy wildflowers, streams, and diverse forest habitats.


    Day 6 

    9. Gaetz Brook Greenway

    (A1/Easy – 7km/40m)  

    This hike begins at the trailhead near the Gaetz Brook community and follows a well-maintained multi-use path through a mix of forested areas and open fields. The route features gentle slopes, gravel and packed earth surfaces, wooden bridges over small streams, and scenic views of wetlands and local wildlife, making it ideal for a relaxed, nature-filled walk.


    10. Clam Harbour Provincial Park  

    (A1/Easy – 5.5km/30m)  

    This walk starts at the wide, sandy beach of Clam Harbour and continues along a scenic coastal trail on the peninsula at the far end of the beach. The route features a mix of firm beach sand, boardwalks, dune grasses, forest patches and rocky shoreline with rugged outcrops.

    This tour flies into and out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Guests can join this tour from anywhere in the world! Please contact us to discuss your airfare and pre-and post-tour accommodation options.


    Proper shoes/boots and poles are recommended.


    Hikes are subject to trail conditions.


    Hiking Difficulty & Alternatives - Hikes may involve uneven terrain, inclines, and extended walking. While we walk at a leisurely pace (3 to 3.5 km an hour based on terrain), it is important that the group stays together.  Participation is at your discretion, and travellers are encouraged to assess their own abilities. Guests may choose to not join a hike or amend a hike, in consultation with the Tour Director.  In some cases, alternative self-guided options may be taken, though this option is not always available.
